Teen Yoga

Yoga, which is becoming increasingly popular for teenagers, is all about balance, strength, and harmony. Not only is yoga good for you physically, but it promotes relaxation and an overall sense of well being. Bring a yoga mat. Sign up begins on January 4th.

Teen Photo Contest
We know you have all those great creative photos in your phones and digital cameras! Share them with us! Open to patrons in grades 7-12 only. You may submit up to four photographs at the Adult Reference Desk. Winning photographs will be framed and put on display in the Teen Corner of the Library and be eligible to win a special prize! Last day for submissions is Friday, February 26, 2009.

Candy Guess Contest
Don’t forget to stop by the Teen Corner at the Library during the month of February to take a guess at how many candies fill the jar! The closest guess without going over will win the candy to share with his or her sweetheart!

Teen Volunteer Valentine Workshop

Help craft Valentines for the elderly and other deserving members of our community. Earn community service credit and make new friends. Sign up begins on January 4th.

Karaoke Kafé

School’s out for the week – so get together with your friends at the library for a fun night filled with karaoke, Wii, board games and ice cream sundaes! Internet stations will be available too! SO MUCH FUN so bring your friends! Sign up begins on January 4th.

Getting Ready to Babysit
Thursday, February 18

FEE: $5.00 per person

This course is designed to help teens develop the skills necessary for the responsibility of being a sitter-- child safety, developmental stages of children and how to plan activities that are age appropriate. Hands-on activities and course certification are included. Sign up begins on January 4th.

You don’t need to be Willy Wonka to make delicious chocolate! June from Kitchen Coaches will teach participants to make almond joys, peanut butter cups and chocolate potato chips. They can then take them home to share with their friends and family! Sign up begins on January 4th.

Battle of the Books 2009

Then consider being part of this summer’s
Battle of the Books
The Battle of the Books is a countywide competition of young adults representing participating Suffolk County public libraries. The competition will take place on Saturday, August 15th at Stony Brook University. Teams will answer trivia questions based on eight different books and score points for their team with each correct answer. If you are interesting in taking part, you must entering grades 6-9, able to attend weekly meetings and be ready for a summer of fun!

Upcoming Regents Review Classes - Sign up beginning on May 1st!

Living Environment: Biology
Tuesday, June 9 & Tuesday, June 16
7-9PM

Fee is $50 per student made payable to Lizabeth Tumminello
This class will consist of two sessions and will be taught by an experienced, NYS Certified Living Environment: Biology teacher. The purpose of the class will be to help students review for and study for the NYS Regents Exam. Course topics and required lab experiments will be covered through review sheets and practice questions. Students will receive review materials and handouts.

Physical Setting: Chemistry
Tuesday, June 2 & Wednesday, June 3
7-9PM

Fee is $50 per student made payable to Lizabeth Tumminello

Teen Digital Photo Contest

Is your digital camera or cell phone loaded with creative pictures? Now is your chance to show off those innovative shots you have taken of your friends, places you have visited, your shoelace or whatever! Email your most creative pictures to wiplteen@suffolk.lib.ny.us or drop off a disk with your pictures at the Adult Reference desk. All entries will be displayed on our new electronic bulletin board located in the Teen Corner at the Library and on this blog. The best digital photo entry will win a cool prize!
RULES: Photo entries are limited to teens in grades 7-12 who are West Islip Library patrons. You may submit up to 3 photos. Selection of photos to be displayed is solely under the discretion of Library staff. All submissions must be made by Friday, March 27, 2009.

Teens & Tweens Volunteer: Project Pillow

Teens & Tweens Volunteer: Project Pillow
On August 25th West Islip teens and tweens got together and made tie pillows to be donated to Good Samaritan Hospital emergency room. These pillows will be given to bring comfort to children in the hospital. We had over 40 volunteers who made 100 pillows!
